Terms of Service

Short version: Use Quill to send real, thoughtful emails. You are the sender of everything you send. No spam, no impersonation, no law-breaking. The service is provided as-is by a small team, and we are not liable if a professor does not write back.

1. Agreement to these terms

These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a binding agreement between you and Quill, Inc. ("Quill," "we," "us"). By creating an account or using quillresearch.org (the "Service"), you agree to these Terms, our Privacy Policy, our End User License Agreement, and our Acceptable Use Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Who may use Quill

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you are under 18, you confirm that a parent or legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these Terms on your behalf. The Service is designed for high school students; by using it you confirm the information you provide about yourself is accurate.

3. What Quill does, and does not do

Quill helps you draft personalized outreach emails to researchers. Quill never sends email on your behalf: drafts open in your own email client, are sent from your own address, and you alone decide whether to send them. You are the sender of every email you send, and you are solely responsible for its content and its compliance with applicable law, including anti-spam laws such as CAN-SPAM.

4. No guarantee of outcomes

Quill does not guarantee replies, internships, research positions, mentorship, admission to any program or university, or any other outcome. Reply-rate figures shown on our site are illustrative estimates based on the difference between personalized and generic outreach, not a promise about your results.

5. AI-generated content

Drafts are generated with the assistance of large language models. AI output can be inaccurate, incomplete, or otherwise flawed. You are responsible for reviewing and editing every draft before sending it. Do not represent AI-generated claims about yourself that are untrue. Quill disclaims all liability arising from your use of AI-generated content.

6. Your account

You are responsible for your account credentials and for all activity under your account. Notify us at hello@quill.ink if you believe your account has been compromised. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or the Acceptable Use Policy, with or without notice.

7. Plans, billing, and refunds

The Free plan includes a limited number of AI personalizations per month. The Pro plan is billed through Stripe at the price shown at checkout, currently on a quarterly cycle, and renews automatically until cancelled. You can cancel at any time, effective at the end of the current billing period. Except where required by law, payments are non-refundable, but if something went wrong, email us and we will try to make it right.

8. Intellectual property

The Service, including its design, code, and content (excluding your drafts and profile information), is owned by Quill and protected by intellectual property law. Your use of the Service is licensed, not sold, under the EULA. You retain full ownership of the emails you draft and send.

9. Disclaimer of warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, MERCHANTABILITY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR SECURE, OR THAT INFERRED EMAIL ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.

10. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, QUILL AND ITS OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, AND CONTRACTORS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST PROFITS, DATA, OR OPPORTUNITIES, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATING TO THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM AROSE, OR (B) TEN US DOLLARS ($10).

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Quill from any claims, damages, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from the emails you send, your violation of these Terms or applicable law, or your infringement of any third party's rights.

12. Termination

You may stop using the Service and delete your data at any time from your Profile page. We may suspend or terminate the Service or your access to it at any time. Sections 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 13 survive termination.

13. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Georgia, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Fulton County, Georgia, and you consent to their jurisdiction. Either party may instead bring an eligible claim in small-claims court.

14. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The "Last updated" date above reflects the current version. Material changes will be announced on the site or by email. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the revised Terms.

15. Miscellaneous

If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remainder stays in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. These Terms, together with the policies they reference, are the entire agreement between you and Quill about the Service. Contact: hello@quill.ink.
